Spinal Cord Rehabilitation

Traumatic spinal cord injuries may result from traffic accidents, falls from heights, diving into shallow water, sports-related injuries, acts of violence, and gunshot or penetrating injuries.

Non-traumatic spinal cord injuries are commonly caused by conditions such as spinal canal stenosis, tumors, vascular disorders, and infections affecting the spinal cord.

The spinal cord rehabilitation team is involved in the care of patients with spinal cord injuries throughout the rehabilitation process, including hospitalization in surgical departments and intensive care units, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation programs, and long-term follow-up.

Our Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Clinic provides specialized healthcare services for patients with spinal cord injuries through a total of 50 inpatient beds in Units Z-G and Z-H, located on the ground floor of our hospital.

Patient Care and Rehabilitation Process

From the moment of admission to our Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Clinic, patients become active participants in their rehabilitation programs.

Throughout hospitalization, patients and their accompanying family members or caregivers receive comprehensive information from the rehabilitation team regarding:

  • Medical treatment and care

  • Individualized rehabilitation programs

  • Prevention of secondary complications

  • Expected duration of hospitalization

  • Discharge planning

  • Follow-up examinations and long-term care

The rehabilitation team is responsible for assessing and managing the various physical, neurological, functional, and psychosocial consequences of spinal cord injury.

These assessments include:

  • Muscle weakness and loss of function in the upper and/or lower extremities

  • Cognitive and emotional functioning

  • Communication and social functioning

  • Nutritional status and swallowing function

  • Respiratory function

  • Bladder, bowel, and sexual functions

  • Autonomic nervous system function

  • Metabolic and endocrine functions

  • Musculoskeletal health

The primary objectives of the rehabilitation team are to develop and implement individualized medical and rehabilitation plans, prevent complications, and help patients achieve the highest possible level of functional independence in activities of daily living.

Our rehabilitation programs also aim to facilitate patients' active participation in society, employment, and education as early as their clinical condition allows.
